PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Office of Community Development's Disaster Recovery Unit has awarded the city of Plaquemine more than $6.5 million to build a regional sewer plant.
According to a news release, the money will be combined with $2.5 million in local funds to build the plant on a 16-acre site adjacent to the city's existing North Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The new plant will replace the aging South Wastewater Treatment Plant, which went out of service in the fall of 2008 when Hurricane Gustav struck the area.
The new facility will have the capacity to serve 18,000 customers and treat 2 million gallons of wastewater per day.
