Pilot's Name Released in Fatal Helicopter Crash

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office is releasing the name of the pilot who died in a helicopter crash Wednesday morning.

Chief Medicolegal Death Investigator Mark Bone says 47-year-old Patrick Becnel from Belle Chase died after crashing in the Gulf of Mexico about 30 miles northeast of Venice.

In all, four people were on the helicopter. Both the U.S. Coast Guard and Acadian Ambulance responded to the crash, airlifting the three survivors to New Orleans to the LSU Medical Center for treatment.

The survivors work for the Wood Group, which is a Scotland-based energy services company that has several offices in Lafayette.

Becnel worked for Panther Helicopters in Belle Chasse.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy and has not released a preliminary cause of death.
