Yesterday evening shortly before 8:00pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 59 approximately three miles north of the U.S. 11 / LA 1090 exit in St. Tammany Parish. The crash took the life of 77 year old Picayune, MS resident John McKean.
Troopers' investigation revealed that the crash occurred as McKean was traveling northbound on Interstate 59 in a 1998 Ford pickup when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle began to drift into the left northbound lane. As the Ford drifted out of its lane, McKean overcorrected to the right causing the pickup to rotate in a clockwise direction and run off road to the right. Upon leaving the interstate, the Ford pickup continued off road striking a fence, overturning, and impacting a tree before coming to rest nearly 110 feet from the paved roadway.
McKean was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; however, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office. Impairment is not suspected.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued or impaired, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver's attention away from the road. To report distracted drivers or other hazardous road conditions, motorists can dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the State Police office closest to you.
