More information coming to light about the PHI helicopter pilot, Arturo Lebron, killed in an accident Monday afternoon.
Lebron was more than a helicopter pilot, he was an Iraq War veteran, a father of two young children, and as friends said, an all around great guy who was taken too soon.
Lebron was flying a Bell 206 PHI helicopter when he went down around 4:00pm Monday. He was about 35 miles south of Grand Isle in the Gulf and the only one in the aircraft.
PHI said a rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene, but it was too late and Lebron did not survive the accident.
PHI spokesperson Brad Deutser released a statement stating, "It is with heavy hearts that his colleagues and each of us at PHI, extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family. We will continue to work closely with the NTSB to understand the cause of the accident and anything that can be learned to prevent situations like this in the future."
The Lebron family remaining in the hearts of many. Friends wrote to KATC and said, "He was a great friend, father and husband. He loved his family."
Lebron survived combat in Iraq. One close friend who served with him wrote that they "loved him like a brother" and said "he was one hell of a soldier."
Lebron was from Lafayette and a graduate of Vermilion Catholic School.
PHI also said, "Out of respect to Arturo and his family, and the on-going review of the accident, we will be unable to share further details until the NTSB releases its findings."
