PEARL RIVER, La. (AP) - Voters in Pearl River will be asked Saturday to renew a quarter-cent sales tax to help pay for the town's sewer operations. The current sales tax does not expire until July 2016, but officials say they put it on the ballot early so that if it fails they can try again later.
Mayor James Lavigne tells The Times-Picayune the quarter cent, which was first enacted in 2006, brings in around $130,000. The total budget for water and sewer operations is around $600,000.
The renewal would be for 10 years, beginning in July 2016.
