Payton Says Recent Injuries No Excuse for Inconsistency Caused by Players

METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Sean Payton says he has no interest in citing bad breaks, injuries or bad bounces on the football field as reasons that his normally high-powered offense isn't putting up points at its usual pace.

The New Orleans Saints' head coach says he and Drew Brees have set the bar high for this offense and expectations haven't been met during a 3-2 start to their Super Bowl title defense.

Payton says recent injuries to Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas do not excuse inconsistency caused by players all across the lineup making untimely mistakes that stall promising drives.

In a 30-20 loss in Arizona on Sunday, those mistakes were glaring. The Saints had a fumble returned for a touchdown and Brees was intercepted three times.
