Passenger accused of stealing car at traffic stop

PAINCOURTVILLE, La. (AP) - Assumption Parish sheriff's deputies say that when a woman was pulled over for a possible seat-belt violation, her passenger pushed her out of the car, took the wheel and drove through several yards in Paincourtville nearly hitting several people.
The Courier reports that 28-year-old Jermaine Moland of Belle Rose was found Sunday in the attic of a shed near the street where police found the car.
It says he was booked with car theft, reckless driving, resisting an officer, aggravated flight from officer, and unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. Other charges were driving under suspension and without a seat belt, open container, marijuana possession, simple battery, and a probation violation.
He was in the Assumption Parish jail awaiting a bond hearing.
