BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A stretch of the Atchafalaya Basin in St. Martin Parish has been reopened to boat traffic after officials determined it was safe to use again.
The 4-mile stretch was reopened Monday by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The area was closed due to the flooding on the Mississippi River that forced the Army Corps of Engineers to open the Morganza Spillway. Opening the spillway flooded the Atchafalaya basin with high water.
The main danger was boaters hitting high-voltage electrical transmission lines between Henderson and Butte La Rose.
As water levels drop, officials say it's safe to boat on the stretch of river reopened near Butte La Rose.
