LAPLACE, La. (AP) - Four children are in state custody and their parents behind bars after St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputies found the children living in "deplorable condition."
The Times-Picayune reports the children - ages 7, 5, 4 and 3 - were removed from their home in LaPlace on Wednesday. Deputies, who were called to the home by a child services worker, say the family slept in one bedroom of the two-bedroom home. Deputies reported clothing "cluttered with other items scattered among filth throughout the home."
Capt. Dane Clement says the parents reported the older children had never attended school.
Authorities arrested 33-year-old Chris Rodrigue and 24-year-old Jenny Cote on charges of improper supervision of a minor by a parent and cruelty to juveniles. Bond for each was set at $20,000.
