NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An advisory panel says the empty office building that once was home to the World Trade Center of New Orleans should be renovated to become a luxury hotel and residential tower.
The panel voted Tuesday to recommend that the city negotiate a development deal based on a proposal to develop the project from Gatehouse Capital.
Rejected was a proposal by some tourism leaders to demolish the building that currently dominates the riverfront skyline and develop a public space with an as-yet unselected piece of major public art.
The recommendation now goes to a board that oversees development of city-owned property. That board will decide whether to negotiate a deal with Gatehouse.
