DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (AP) - Denham Springs police have arrested the owner of a gold-buying store, accused of violating "secondhand dealer laws."
Detective Zach Albritton said in a press release to The Advocate that 61-year-old Ahmad Asmar of Baton Rouge owns We Buy Gold in Denham Springs.
Albritton said secondhand dealer laws require businesses that purchase gold and other metals, such as copper, to get photo identification from the seller and pay for the metals with a check.
After receiving several complaints about Asmar's store, Albritton said undercover detectives went to the store March 22 to sell a gold ring, which Asmar paid for in cash.
He said Asmar did not ask the undercover officer for an ID card with photo.
Asmar is free on $500 bail.
