WEST MONROE, La. (AP) - You don't need to go to the sheriff's office any longer to buy property at the tax-title sale held for the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office and the city of West Monroe.
The News-Star reports that the auction this week is going online.
Under state law, property can be bought for the amount of delinquent taxes plus interest, penalties and such. The winner bids for the smallest percentage of ownership interest.
The buyer has 72 hours to pay in full - but the delinquent owner has three years to pay the taxes, other costs and penalties, and keep the property.
The sale is being conducted by an auctioneer website, CivicSource.com.
Company spokesman Brian Danos says this sale has more than 1,300 properties going for $110 to $110,000.
