Ouachita Parish system proposes new pay schedule

MONROE, La. (AP) - Ouachita Parish teachers with advanced degrees hired for the 2013-14 school year and beyond will earn less initially under the district's new salary schedule than they would have earned under the existing salary schedule.

Director of Business Juanita Duke says the change is part of a plan for teacher compensation that will bring the district into compliance with new state laws governing salaries.

The new compensation schedule was approved Tuesday by the school board's finance committee and will be presented to the full board Thursday.

In the past, teachers were rewarded with increased pay for advanced degrees and time on the job. The new salary schedule also considers teachers' job performance, according to an evaluation, as well as demand for their position.
