MONROE, La. (AP) - The Ouachita Parish School Board voted to adopt a new teacher compensation plan under certain conditions.

Last month, it was determined that parish teachers with advanced degrees hired for the 2013-14 school year and beyond will earn less initially under the district's new salary schedule than they would have earned under the existing salary schedule.

The district's Director of Business Juanita Duke tells The News-Star the change is part of a plan for teacher compensation that will bring the district into compliance with new state laws governing salaries.

However, board attorney, Elmer Noah, said the constitutionality of Act 1 of the certified teacher compensation plan for 2013-2014 is being considered by the state Supreme Court.

Noah said the board should approve the pay plan, pending actions by the courts.
