Orleans mayor: sheriff's jail pact could harm city

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Mayor Landrieu says police might have to be laid off or furloughed to pay for prison guards if the city is forced to fund jail improvements Orleans Sheriff Marlin Gusman has agreed to make in a pact with the U.S. Justice Department.

Landrieu's remarks Thursday were made during a City Council meeting but at times appeared aimed at federal judges.

The proposed jail agreement is awaiting approval in federal court.

A separate agreement the city made to reform the police department has already been approved. But the city says it cannot afford to fund both.

Gusman disputes the Landrieu administration's claim that the jail reforms will draw $22 million annually but declined to estimate the actual cost.
