The Acadia Parish Police Jury approved Thursday night an emergency 60-day ordinance regulating the use of so-called "scare-away guns." The ordinance requires landowners to turn off carbide and propane field guns between the hours of 9:00 P. M. and 6:00 A. M. The ordinance requires the guns to be directed away from homes and schools and mandates that the guns be no closer than 200 feet from a home or 400 feet from a school.

The ordinance was proposed after residents in rural areas about the loud blasts produced by the guns in the middle of the night. Police jury secretary-treasurer Richard Latiolais says the police jury may consider a long-term ordinance. However, no date has been set to revisit the issue.
