April is awareness month for oral cancer, which is part of a larger group of head and neck cancers. Oral, head, and neck cancers arise in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, thyroid glands, salivary glands, throat, or voice box.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of 85% of oral, head, and neck cancers. Find out more about oral, head, and neck cancers at the following links: oralcancerfoundation.org or headandneck.org.
Signs of oral, head, and neck cancer:
* a sore in your mouth that doesn't heal
* constant pain, lumps, or patches in your mouth
* pain around your teeth
* changes in your voice
* a lump in your neck
As always, choosing mostly plant foods, limiting red meat and avoiding processed meat, aiming for a healthy weight, and at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day can reduce your chances of developing cancer.
