OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - Part of Louisiana Highway 749 - known in Opelousas as Railroad Ave. - is closed while crews work to right a derailed freight train.
Jim Herring of Union Pacific Railroad Co. says the 10 cars were carrying rocks for railroad track beds when they derailed Tuesday evening.
Police Chief Perry Gallow said Wednesday that nobody was hurt and there was no property damage.
Herring says the derailment is still being investigated, but it appears the load in the cars was unbalanced.
State Department of Transportation and Development district engineer Bill Fontenot says the highway was being closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and the work was expected to be finished Friday.
