State Police Troop I says a single vehicle crash claimed the life of an Opelousas Police officer.
According to investigating Troopers, at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, 50-year-old Assistant Warden Peggy Sylvester of Opelousas, was driving a 2007 Ford Expedition Opelousas Police unit north on LA Highway 31, south of LA Highway 742. Assistant Warden Sylvester, who was on-duty, was passing a car when she lost control of her unit and traveled off the left side of the road. Her unit traveled through a ditch and struck a tree. Assistant Warden Sylvester was not wearing a seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Troopers indicated it was raining when the crash occurred.
Troopers do not suspect impairment was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
At the time of her death, Assistant Warden Sylvester was a 14 year law enforcement veteran. She had been employed with the Opelousas Police Department for three years. Prior to her employment with OPD, Assistant Warden Sylvester worked one year for the Eunice Police Department and 10 years with the St. Landry Sheriff's Office. She is survived by her parents Clara and Peter Pickens, her companion Sergeant Rodney May, her three children Amber Sylvester, Rochelle Sanders and Richard Sanders.
