At 4:17 pm Friday afternoon, the Opelousas Police Department was notified that a purse had been snatched from a customer at a local department store. Patrol officers who were monitoring stores due to the increased shopping responded within minutes. The description of the suspect was then given out to all officers. Pfc Herbert Levier, just hours earlier, answered a disturbance complaint involving an individual fitting this same description, and the individual's sister. At 4:31 pm the observant officer located this same individual identified as Jeremy Babineaux blocks away from the crime scene. A search of the immediate area yielded the wallet with all its contents. Babineaux confessed to the crime and the items were returned to the victim. Jeremy Babineaux, 20 years old of Opelousas, was charged with purse snatching. Opelousas Police will continue to aggressively patrol both neighborhoods as well as business's to make sure that all citizens have a safe holiday season.
