Opelousas Mayor Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

A big event in Lafayette brought out big names and big honors for an Acadiana mayor who's a fixture in the state's political scene. Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins received the lifetime achievement award from the Lafayette Democratic Executive Committee

"I'm very humbled by it. It's not something I did on my own. It's something done through most of the efforts of the people that are here tonight," Mayor Cravins said.

Cravins previously served in the state legislature as both a representative and a senator. He says his proudest moment was when he had legislation passed to help troubled youth. While he was praised for his civic work, he was also toasted as a friend.

"We had a good relationship. I never had any complaints from him. I couldn't do everything he wanted, he couldn't do everything I wanted, but we were always gentlemenly about it," Former Governor of Louisiana Edwin Edwards said.

"When I had the opportunity to run for city-parish council in Lafayette Parish, I lost my mother the day before the election;and one of the first calls I received was from Don Cravins," Scott Mayor Purvis Morrison said.

For Mayor Cravins, although he still has a city to run now, he hopes he can continue to impact lives for the rest of his career.

"I want to encourage young people to get involved and to try to do things that will try to make our community a more cohesive community and a more productive community," Mayor Cravins said.
