OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - Opelousas Mayor Donald Cravins says he will ask the city council at its Feb. 19 meeting to either create an independent school district for the city or move to a charter school system.

Cravins cited the failure last week of the St. Landry Parish School System once again to choose a superintendent and the news that the board is closing Creswell Elementary in an attempt to prevent its takeover by the state.

Cravins says a failing school system makes it nearly impossible to attract new businesses to the area.

He floated a similar proposal when he first ran for the mayor's office.

He pointed out that of the city's 10 schools, only two are doing an adequate job.
