A 23-year-old Opelousas man is accused of stealing several cars from an auto dealership on I-49.
Wednesday night, the Opelousas Police Department's Bicycle Patrol observed a vehicle enter an auto dealership on I-49 Service Road, according to police. As Officers began to approach the vehicle, they observed the driver exit the vehicle and start to run while the vehicle was still in motion. The vehicle caused damage to a parked vehicle on the lot. Officers pursued the suspect identified as Tamarcus Sam. According to police, Sam stole several vehicles from the dealership.
Sam is being held in the Opelousas jail charged with five counts of theft of an automobile and criminal damage to property.
The Bicycle Patrol enables officers to get closer to businesses, residences, and individuals without being detected, stated Sgt Jody White. The Opelousas Police Bicycle Patrol was developed for that reason and will patrol the residential neighborhoods and business districts on a nightly basis, added White.
