On 10/25/09 the Opelousas Police Department after several months of Investigation into Burglaries being committed in and around the Opelousas area was able to arrest several individuals connected to those crimes. The Opelousas Police Department Special Investigations Division began developing information for several months into the activity of a certain group of individuals that were breaking into homes while homeowners were away working. What investigators found out was that these individuals would pick out certain areas of the city to concentrate on at one time, kick the doors in, steal items of value and either sell or hide the items before police were on to them. Officers found that these individuals were traveling about the city by way of bicycles with back packs on, dressed in school clothing as if they were coming and going to school. At least three of the individuals were Juveniles. All of the individuals were familiar too our agency for prior burglaries. This particular investigation into the groups activities led officers to solve too date seven burglaries and are currently looking into linking the group to an additional ten. The items taken from residences and the damage sustained from this groups criminal activity was into the tens of thousands. The Opelousas Police Department is currently working with other agencies to help close unsolved burglaries in this parish. Chief Perry Gallow would like to thank all the citizens who have taken time to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods and would encourage this practice to continue.
