Opelousas firefighters battled a house fire at an abandoned home last night for nearly two hours. Asst. Fire Chief John C. Saucier says they arrived at 808 North Main Street at 8:56, two minutes after a passerby reported the fire.

Saucier says a police officer and a couple of neighbors say they've seen a homeless man in and out of the house and last saw him leave the house some time before the fire.

Invstigators are trying to determine the cause. Saucier says it appears the fire started in the back of the house and reached the attic.
