Opelousas Catholic Student Fights Brain Tumor, Community Gives Support

Opelousas Catholic School, already experiencing a difficult year after two other teens died in a car accident, once again bonds together to help another student.

15-year-old Meghan Briley is a sophomore and runs track at Opelousas Catholic. One of three triplets, her sisters said you can always tell her apart.

"She's always funny, crazy, always had a smile on her face," said her sisters, Macie, Lainey and Morgan Briley.

Now they're trying to keep that smile going. In May, Meghan was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Doctors were only able to remove half of the tumor and now she's fighting for her life in the St. Jude Hospital in Memphis. The sisters said they miss having their other half at home.

"(It's) Hard, especially a triplet sister," said the triplets Macie and Morgan. "Not having the other half with them, it's like something's missing," added older sister Lainey.

But the Briley family won't face this trial alone. The school community is putting on a massive benefit Saturday to help them both financially and spiritually during this difficult time.

"All these people that have come together to put on such an awesome event to take a little bit of the sting away from what the family's having to go through and deal with at this time," said John Braham, an Opelousas Catholic coach and teacher.

Organizers have collected hundreds of items, ranging from a crawfish table, paintings, a dirt bike and even a guitar autographed by Sammy Kershaw. All of the material items are simply a reflection of everyone who wanted to help, even people who don't know the Briley family.

"The things that people are doing and donating, just to try to help them, it's truly amazing," said Braham.

The benefit will be at Opelousas Catholic School Saturday, June 23, starting at 10:00 am. Admission is $5 and all proceeds will go to the family to help with medical costs and bills.

Here's a rundown of Saturday's benefit for Meghan Briley:
-Seven live bands
-Rice and gravy cook off (cooking starts at 8:00am, judging starts at 2:00pm)
-Poker run
-Silent and live auctions
-Kids events include face painting, sand art, human bowling, petting zoo
-Food and drinks, including snowballs and beer
