Thursday afternoon officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the second to last gate on the Morganza Spillway.
They made the decision to close the gate because the heavy flow that was coming from the Mississippi River decreased.

"It's the operational procedure of the spillway. When we opened it as the flow increased on the Mississippi River side and we increased the number of openings on the spillway so we can divert more water into the Atchafalaya Basin.

Army officials are planning to close the last gate on the spillway in about 3 three weeks after water drain from bays near the spillway.
