Since Eddie Soileau became the Evangeline Parish Sheriff two years ago, he's been working to build up the department.
"We've been pinching pennies and getting whatever we can from whoever is willing to donate and we try to utilize it and make a better department," said Soileau.
But with the help of an old friend, he received a surprise that will benefit Evangeline Parish.
"We received a command post from Louis Ackal, Sheriff of Iberia Parish. He knows we have a poor department here and we are trying to build it up," said Soileau.
The command post will serve as a portable office. Police can take it anywhere and communicate back to the department. It will be especially helpful during hurricanes and other emergencies.
If receiving one surprise wasn't enough, the Sheriff's Office also applied for a FEMA grant and got it. The office purchased a generator which will help make things easier, something they could have used last year while on the scene investigating a murder.
"The darkness overtook us and we could have used it there. Of course, we had light, but not as good of light as this is going to produce," said Soileau.
