One person is dead and one injured after an early morning crash in Calcasieu Parish.
Sunday morning around 2:45am, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of a traffic accident on Gateway Drive near Belfield Drive in Moss Bluff. The investigation revealed a single vehicle accident occurred when a car traveling west on Gateway Drive at a high rate of speed, drove off the roadway striking a ditch and culvert on the south side of the road. The car then became airborne and landed in the south ditch after overturning several times. Jerry W. Sonnier, Jr., 26 years old, Westlake, was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Evidence indicates Sonnier was the driver of the car.
The passenger, Jamie G. Stratton, 25 years old, Lake Charles, was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Neither Sonnier nor Stratton were wearing a seatbelt and high speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash. It is not known if alcohol was a factor; however, a toxicology report will be conducted as mandated by state law.
CPSO Sr. Cpl. Chris Ramos is the lead investigator of this accident.
