One Dead, One Charged with Second Degree Murder

On July 3, 2011, at approximately 1:00 am, Lafayette Police responded to 130 Northern Avenue regarding a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered the victim, a 36 year old male of Lafayette, lying on the ground with 2 gunshot wounds to the chest. According to witnesses, the victim and the suspect were inside of the residence when an argument began. The two men then exited the residence and continued the argument. The suspect, Jonathon Troy Alfred (38) of Lafayette, produced a handgun and fired two shots at the victim, striking him twice. The victim, who was also armed, returned fire, but missed Alfred. The victim died at the scene from his injuries. Jonathon Alfred was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Murder.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The case remains under investigation.
