A vehicle plunges into the Bayou Teche resulting in one woman's death, while a young boy manages to walk away unharmed.
It happened around three this morning on LA Highway 355 in Cecila. The driver, 23 year old, Debricka Sylvestor, of Breaux Bridge was driving her Ford Explorer east on LA 355 when her car veered off the road and went into the Bayou Teche.
Sylvestor was not alone. Officials say she had a twelve year-old passenger in the car with her, but he managed to escape from the vehicle and swim to safety unharmed.
It took the St. Martin Parish Dive Team and State Police more than five hours to locate Sylvestor's body. Officials say Sylvestor was able to get out of the car. She attempted to swim to shore, but officials say she drowned before she could reach safety.
State Police spokesperson, Stephen Hammons, said "the case is under investigation, what we believe initially happened is that the driver as driving south on LA 355. She possibly just straightened out around the curb, but that is still under investigation."
Sylvestor's body was found just a few hundred yards away from where the vehicle plunged into the water.
