Oil in Plaquemines Parish Grossly Underestimated

BELLE CHASSE, La. (AP) - Plaquemines Parish president Billy
Nungesser says the amount of oil that has hit his parish has been
grossly underestimated by Coast Guard and BP officials.
In a Tuesday news release, Nungesser said that parish employees
worked through the holiday weekend to map out acres oiled in the
parish and found 3,000 acres have been impacted, not the 30 acres
announced last month by the Coast Guard and BP.
The areas found oiled included East Grand Terre Island,
Wilkinson Bay, islands in Cat Bay and Bay Ronquille, Point Chenier
Ronquille Island, South Pass area, Redfish Bay area, and the Pass a
Loutre area.
The Coast Guard and BP both said they were checking on the
parish's report.
