NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources
is telling operators of oil and gas wells to be prepared to shut
down if ordered by the Coast Guard.
The emergency order issued Tuesday applies to oil and gas wells
in Cameron, Vermilion, Iberia, St. Mary, Terrebonne, Lafourche,
Jefferson, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, Orleans and St. Tammany
parishes.
All border coastal waters. Oil already has reached some of the
areas from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. At least 4 million
gallons of oil has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico since the rig
exploded and sank last month.
Although no shutdowns have been ordered, state officials are
telling well operators to be ready to do so if ordered by federal
officials overseeing the spill.
