Opelousas General Health System is proud to partner with Miles Perret Cancer Services to expand the Miles Strong program for people currently in cancer treatment. Miles Strong is a ten-week, small group exercise program, which began in December 2008 at Miles Perret Cancer Services in Lafayette.
"Participants who have been through the program have shown significant improvement in physical strength and mental well-being," according to Miles Perret Director of Public Relations Julie Kelley.
Kelley says, "The goal is to bring that kind of wellness to cancer survivors in St. Landry Parish, so that they can feel as strong as possible during their treatment."
"This program is an excellent example of the type of service that we want to offer our community," said Gerald Fornoff, President/CEO of OGHS. "It allows us, as a health system, to fulfill our Mission, "Our Family Caring For Yours". "We are extremely thrilled that our Rehabilitation Center will accommodate these survivors," he added.
Through a grant from the Komen Acadiana chapter, Miles Perret Cancer Services is now expanding Miles Strong to St. Landry Parish. Five women with breast cancer will spend the next ten weeks exercising together at Opelousas General's Rehabilitation Facility. The Wellness Director at Miles Perret Cancer Services will oversee this program. Fatigue levels, blood pressure and other health indicators will be tracked to determine the impact of exercise on people going through cancer treatment.
