LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) Calcasieu Parish grand jurors have cleared a Lake Charles police officer of any charges in connection with the shooting death earlier this year.
The American Press reports Cpl. Dustin Fontenot was exonerated Thursday in connection with the Feb. 9 shooting death of 29-year-old Warren Lawrence.
Grand jurors declined to indict Fontenot on a charge of negligent homicide.
Lawrence reportedly walked into a house, where police were investigating a burglary call. Police say Lawrence came up behind Fontenot and Cpl. Lamar Cook as the officers were searching for the burglary suspect.
Officials say the officers turned and saw Lawrence, and Fontenot fired his weapon believing Lawrence was armed.
State police handled the shooting investigation.
