NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A state lawmaker says Louisiana officials
will announce Wednesday that steelmaker Nucor Corp. has chosen a
Louisiana site for a $2 billion pig iron plant.
Rep. Alton Aubert of Vacherie says he was informed of the
decision Wednesday by the administration of Gov. Bobby Jindal. The
administration won't confirm the decision, but Jindal has scheduled
a news conference for 1:30 p.m. in St. James Parish.
Local economic development officials say they expect the
announcement to be the Nucor plant.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor did not immediately return a call
for comment.
The project, near Convent, is expected to employ 500 people at
an average annual salary of $75,000. Additional phases could raise
the investment to $4 billion and jobs to 925.
