Qualifying reopens Wednesday in the Mermentau Chief of Police race after nobody qualified during last week's sign-up period. The Mermentau police chief position has been in turmoil for over a year now. Former chief Amber Dubois was ousted last February from the job after it was discovered she lived outside the village. Steven Istre was appointed to fill the position until a special election could be held.

This office has been notorious to fill. Mermentau officials say it was a challenge to find anyone will to take the position on an interim basis. An election was scheduled in November, but no one qualified for that race, and the election was canceled.
