The 70th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team is set to travel to Columbus, Ohio this weekend to participate in the National Indoor Regionals also dubbed the ITA Kick-off Weekend.
The event features 60 of the top teams nationally with the winner of each regional site advancing to the ITA Division I National Men's Indoor Championship in Seattle, Washington on Feb. 15-19.
"This is a great chance for us to find out where we stand early in the year," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "Every year the National Indoor Tournament starts of the dual match season, while outdoor nationals ends the season. We were fortunate to be selected among the nations top teams. We feel we have a great opportunity to play on the national stage early in the season."
Louisiana opens competition on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face No. 65 Miami (Fla.) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Cajuns will then face either No.4 Ohio State or No.71 ETSU on Sunday.
"Playing the Hurricanes, a member of the ACC which is one of the top three conferences in the country, is a great chance to see how far our program has come since taking over three seasons ago," Jeffrey added. "Going to Columbus, Ohio will be a great way to start the season. If we can carry over the success we had in the fall I think we will get the results we are looking for."
The Ragin' Cajuns will look to improve upon its 15-8 record from a year ago. UL returns three starters from the 2012 spring season. The Cajuns will lean heavily on its highly touted freshman class including newcomers Jake Wynan and Edgar Lopez.
Brothers Jake and Jarred Wynan have garnered the most attention for Louisiana as they are both ranked regionally after combining to finish the fall with a singles record of 17-6.
The Cajuns three returning starters, junior Rick de Groot and sophomores Damian Farinola and Jarred Wynan, each posted 10-plus wins a year ago.
After the ITA Kick-off Weekend, the men's tennis team returns to Lafayette, La. to open the home slate on Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. when the Cajuns host the University of New Orleans at the Cajun Courts. Admission is free and there will be free crawfish for the first 50 fans in attendance.
