No. 2 LSU Reels Off 9th Straight Win

Shortstop Alex Bregman recorded his ninth straight multi-hit game as No. 2 LSU (27-2) defeated Alcorn State (6-27) by a score of 7-3 Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.

Bregman, a freshman from Albuquerque, N.M., is now riding a 17-game hit streak and is hitting .619 in his last nine games.

LSU moves on to face Southern Mississippi (11-16) Wednesday in Metairie, La. in the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic.

"I'm glad that one is over," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We did what we needed to do to win the game, but Alcorn State gave us a serious challenge. They competed extremely hard, and we certainly respect that in an opponent. Sometimes it's tough after an emotional SEC series to re-focus on the next game, but we recovered from the early deficit and were able to get the lead and hold it for the win."

The Tigers fell behind early after a pair of long balls in the first two innings from Alcorn State shortstop Angel Rosa and first baseman Ashton Lewis gave the Braves a 3-0 lead.

With one out in the third inning, Bregman tripled to left to start the Tigers' comeback. He later scored on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Raph Rhymes.

Bregman and Rhymes came through once again in the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 3-3. Designated hitter Alex Edward (2-for-3) gave LSU its first lead of the night with an RBI single, scoring Rhymes from third.

Rhymes would deliver another RBI with a long ball over the left field wall. His second home run of the season extended the Tigers' lead to 5-3.

First baseman Mason Katz (2-for-2, with two walks) singled immediately after Rhymes' homer, and later scored on a fielder's choice to make it 6-3.

A third run in the seventh came off of an RBI single from catcher Chris Chinea.

Right-hander Hunter Devall (2-0) earned the victory in relief with four shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out three.

Alcorn State starting pitcher Mundo Sanchez (0-1) suffered the defeat, allowing six runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out two.
