he LSU Eunice softball team saw its' bats heat up a cold Wednesday afternoon as they swept visiting Alvin Community College in their 2014 home opening games, taking game one 8-3 before a 17-0 win in the second game.
The No. 1-ranked Lady Bengals improved to 7-0 on the season with the victories.
"A lot of times in these cold conditions you think the bats would be slow, but they really came alive," head coach Andy Lee said.
"Some people really had great games. Everyone contributed and we played a lot of people. All the girls threw well (in the circle) as well."
In the opener, sophomore Codi Covington led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run over the left-center field wall and LSU Eunice never looked back, scoring two runs in the first before a single run in the second inning and posting a five-run fourth inning in the win.
Covington finished the first game 3-for-4 with that home run, while fellow sophomore Brooke Clark also finished 3-for-4 at the plate, collecting a double and RBI of her own.
Sophomore Carey Alexis notched a pair of doubles and drove home two runs, while sophomore Ashley Suberivelle (1 RBI) and Morgan Tauzin also tallied a double each. Freshman Taylor Boulet added a hit as well.
In the circle, freshman Destin Vicknair earned the win after tossing five innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned runs) while sophomore Elizabeth Delafield came on to wrap up the final two innings.
Leading by one heading into the fourth inning, the Lady Bengals loaded the bases before back-to-back walks were drawn by Nolan and Cole before Alexis doubled to deep center field to clear the bases and give LSU Eunice the lead for good.
The second game saw freshman Raven Cole toss a no-hitter in the circle, walking four while striking out seven Alvin batters, but she was overshadowed by the Lady Bengals' huge offensive output.
Clark again led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as 10 different LSU Eunice batters collected an RBI.
Freshman Katie Flowers went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, while Covington (1-2, double) and Boulet (2-2, double) each collected two RBIs.
Freshmen Brittany Johnson (1-2), Camile Quebodeaux (1-1, BB), Dani Cruickshank (1-2, BB, HBP), Alexa Thibodeaux (0-3, BB) and Ginny Daggett (1-3), along with Cole (2-2, 2 BB) all tallied an RBI as part the offensive output.
The Lady Bengals sent 12 players to the plate in the 10-run first inning that saw them collect seven hits and draw four walks before they added five more runs in the second, highlighted by Flowers' two-run double and RBI singles from Johnson and Quebodeaux.
LSU Eunice is back in action at home on Friday afternoon when they welcome Jeff Davis Community College for a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
"We haven't played a game over 42 degrees this year, so we are looking forward to that 67 degrees - we hope the weather man is right, but we are ready to get back after it Friday," Lee said.
Friday's games can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard on KVPI 1050 AM.
