No. 1 Cajuns Set To Host New Orleans Tonight

LAFAYETTE, La. - For the second time this season the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate baseball poll after going 4-0 last week including a sweep of Troy and posting the best start in program history, Collegiate Baseball announced on Monday.

The Cajuns (30-3, 11-1 Sun Belt) also moved up to third in the other four polls - Baseball America, Perfect Game, NCBWA and USA Today. The squad received a first place vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Louisiana opens a five-game week with a pair of midweek games against in-state opponents hosting New Orleans at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before heading to Lake Charles to face McNeese State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Tuesday's game will be televised on myKLAF-TV with Dan McDonald providing play-by-play and Kevin Cantrelle adding color. Both games can be heard on ESPN 1420-AM as Jay Walker will be making the call.

The Ragin' Cajuns have win six straight and 20 of their last 12 to lead the country in wins and winning percentage and have the nation's best road record with a 13-0 mark away from the Tigue.

Offensively, the Cajuns rank top 5 in the nation in 11 offensive categories. Louisiana leads the country in home runs (41), sacrifice flies (28), slugging percentage (.541) and is ranked second in doubles (82) and triples (19).

The Cajuns increased their batting average by 17 points last week after starting the week with a .309 average. The team recorded 67 hits including 28 for extra bases in four games to improve their average to .326 on the season.

Junior Jace Conrad leads the team hitting .380 with 10 doubles, three triples and six home runs. Conrad is currently riding a team-best 17-game hit streak and has reached safely in 23 straight games.

Caleb Adams is second on the team hitting .379 and leads the squad with a .748 slugging percentage and a .500 on base percentage. Adams has reached base in 27 straight games and is on a nine-game hit streak.

The meeting with UNO (9-20, 2-10 Southland) is the first since 2010 when the Cajuns swept a three-game SBC series against the Privateers in New Orleans. Louisiana holds a 79-67 edge in the series and has won the last nine regular season contests.

New Orleans ended a six-game skid with a 10-6 win over Incarnate Word on Sunday. The Privateers 5-12 on the road this year and are led by Samuel Capielano who is hitting .374 with 46 hits including five doubles and a triple. UNO is hitting .246 as a team and has a 4.08 ERA.

Louisiana holds an 88-62 series edge against the Cowboys (19-11, 9-3 Southland) after winning both meetings a year ago. The Cajuns have a four-game win streak in the series and have won 13 of the last 15 meetings.

McNeese State is coming off of a sweep of Houston Baptist over the weekend. The Cowboys are currently in first place in the Southland Conference and are hitting .292 as a team with 53 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs.

MSU has six players hitting .300 or better led by Matt Williams at .353 with 36 hits. Andrew Guillotte is second on the squad hitting .343 with a team-best 12 doubles.

Following the two midweek contests, the Cajuns continue Sun Belt action as they host UALR in a three-game series at the Tigue starting at 6 p.m. on Friday. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 6 p.m., while the series finale is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
