The skateboarding community in Lafayette is alive and kicking, and no one knows that better than Rukus. The skateboard shop, has been open for over a decade, thanks to the faithful patrons of Acadiana. And now, Rukus is partnering with Nike to create a one-of-a-kind product.
"It's basically an homage to the culture of South Louisiana, and what's kept us around for so many years," says local Rukus Manager Dan Roberts.
The shoe, designed by the Rukus crew out of Baton Rouge, is inspired by a crawfish boil, and the soul of the Cajun experience.
Roberts describes the shoe as, "A brushed steel toecap, to represent that pot obviously. An embossed leather heelcup that's yellow that represents the corn and the veggies. And then of course the side paneling, which kind of jumps out the most out of anything is the newspaper print."
This isn't the first time Rukus has partnered with Nike, and they say they hope this isn't the last. After all, if the shoes take off and sell out, it could boost the skateboarding community in the Hub City.
"You've got to shoot for the stars. Hopefully there's a line around the block and we can make sure everybody gets everything that they want and need. We'll just have to see how it goes. I've gotten people calling me since last week hoping to pre-book them. Hopefully that's an idea of what Saturday will be like. Hopefully it is but we'll just have to see," says Roberts.
The shoe will launch Saturday, August 16th at Rukus on Jefferson Street and stores across the country that carry Nike skateboarding gear. The shoes will retail for $105, and once they're gone, they're gone. Rukus says they'll also have shirts and other apparel to mark the occasion.
