THIBODAUX, La. (AP) Nicholls State University says football coach Jay Thomas will be released from his duties effective Nov. 27.
The decision to release Thomas, who just finished his fifth year as head coach his 12th with the Colonels was announced Friday.
Thomas held an overall record of 26-36 as head coach and led the Colonels to the Southland Conference Championship in 2005.
After earning a 21-21 record through his first four years, the Colonels have gone 5-15 over the last two seasons and have not had a winning season in conference play since 2005.
The Colonels' only wins in the 2009 campaign came against Duquense (3-7), a winless Northwestern State (0-10) team and Southeastern Louisiana (6-5) on Thursday night to close out the season.
A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
