Cathy Sonnier will ring in the new year without her daughter Rachael...who died in a car accident that police say was caused by a drunk driver.
Sonnier says the holidays have been rough, "the heartbreak we are all experiencing right now overshadows everything that the holidays are supposed to mean. Because someone made the decision to drink and drive."
Rachael Sonnier died just before Thanksgiving. Her family skipped Thanksgiving, Christmas wasn't the same...and it never will be.
Troop I Commander Becket Breaux says they're stepping up patrols to help prevent another crash like Rachael's. Last New Year's Eve, there wasn't one deadly crash in the Troop I patrol area.
Breaux sympathizes with Sonnier, saying, "I've got two daughters of my own, just like everyone has family of their own. We're stepping up patrols to make sure their's not an empty chair at your home this holiday season."
Sonnier knows she can't stop everyone from drinking and driving on New Years Eve, but she hopes that while everyone is planning their New Year's activites, they plan on making the right decision.
Sonnier says, "The most important plan is how are you going to travel and not endanger your life and the lives of others as well on New Years."
