It was a hard fought election in Maurice, but Sunday, the new Mayor took his oath of office...KATC'S Chris Welty was at the inauguration.
"It's always been a dream of mine to serve the people."
No longer a dream, now a reality for Wayne Theriot, newest Mayor for the Village of Maurice. The town voted Theriot into office-- previous Mayor Bob Ferguson served just one term. Theriot, a former alderman for 16 years says he wanted to give the people of Maurice a new option.
"I ran offering the people a choice for their mayor and it's the job I wanted."
One of his first goals in office is to open a new line of communication by sending the agenda and minutes of meetings via e-mail.
"There was some people that felt as though there was some disconnect between the village, officials, administration, and themselves"
Theriot and former Mayor Ferguson are neighbors, but that connection didn't make for an easier election season. Ferguson tried to have Theriot disqualified saying Theriot's job at UL as an administrator would conflict with the demanding schedule as mayor.
Theriot says, "we always remain friends and two to three times during the election we did talk and we've talked since. The election night he came over and was more than happy and been very cooperative and I hope we can continue that."
