In 2009, a girl was killed when she fell from a horse in Eunice and since then parish officials in St. Landry have been scrutinizing the rules for trail rides.

"We are a very rural parish, it's nice to go riding on the gravel roads among the shady trees."

St. Landry Parish President Don Menard paints a beautiful picture with his words of a recreation that is a cultural institution in this part of the state. But for years, officials have been talking about new rules for trail riding. At last month's council meeting an ordinance with the new rules was tabled, but will be voted on next month.

Some of the trail rides bring out thousands on horseback and now following the lead of other towns-- Opelousas will require more supervision of the rides.

"The old ordinance was one spotter per 100 riders, the new ordinance is 2 spotters per 100."

In addition to the watchful eye of officers, Menard says there needs to be better organization so now wrist bands will be required for all riders. And at the trail rides where there are thousands--

"If you're not registered, you can't join on the grounds."

And those who participate in the trail rides say these changes are for the better.

"We all think it's a positive thing that the parish government is implementing these changes," said Joshua Etienne.
