BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal's new revenue secretary Tim Barfield is on the job - but not officially as the secretary.
Barfield has started working as executive counsel at the Louisiana Department of Revenue until the state Senate confirms his appointment as secretary, a move that won't happen until the 2013 regular session.
Though he doesn't have the title of secretary, Barfield is getting the full $250,000 salary promised him by the governor, according to department spokesman Byron Henderson.
Barfield's salary is more than twice what was paid to his predecessor, causing some legal issues for the Jindal administration.
The administration put Barfield in the executive counsel job to circumvent the salary cap on the revenue secretary's position, until lawmakers agree to the pay hike in budget legislation next year.
