NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Catholic church bells pealed across New Orleans at the news of a pope's election. Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio is now Pope Francis.
The election of a Latin American brought joy to Robert Stanley, a Chicago resident visiting New Orleans, and to the Rev. Kenneth Obiekwe (oh-bee-AYK-way), Nigerian pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in central Louisiana.
Obiekwe says the election "will bring fresh air to the church." He says he believes Pope Francis chose the name to follow in the footsteps of someone known for spirituality and for revival in the church.
Stanley says it's also good that he's from an area somewhat removed from sex scandals which seem to have consumed the church in the U.S. and Europe.
