A project to install new grass in the outfield and foul territories of Alex Box Stadium is underway and scheduled to be completed near the end of this month.
LSU coach Paul Mainieri explained the need for the new surface.
"When we first moved into the new stadium (in 2009) we planted ‘performance' Bermuda grass and it just hasn't been a good fit," Mainieri said. "In 2010 we decided to try something different and planted ‘celebration' Bermuda in the infield, and the infield has looked great ever since.
"We put off doing it in the outfield because of the time that we would have to be off of the field for such a big project. Now is a great time to get it done before we start fall practice later this month."
Mainieri thanked the members of the LSU Baseball Coaches Committee, the booster club that supports the program through annual donations.
"We got approval for the project right away," Mainieri said, "in large part due to the contributions of our Coaches Committee who make covering such a large project a quick reality. We feel like this is a tremendous upgrade to what is already the best stadium in college baseball, the ‘showplace' of the collegiate game."
