New Orleans to Host WrestleMania XXX

After months of rumors and speculation, New Orleans city officials and World Wrestling Entertainment announced this morning that the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will host WrestleMania XXX next spring. This is the first time wrestling's premiere event will take place in Louisiana. A week-long fan festival leading up to the April 6, 2014, wrestling supershow--WrestleMania Axxess--will be held at the Morial Convention Center.

"WWE thanks the city of New Orleans and the Saints for welcoming our biggest celebration of the year for the first time to The Big Easy," said WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon in a release. "We can't think of a better city or a more legendary venue than the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to host the 30th annual WrestleMania. Let the good times roll."

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was also excited about the news. "We are proud to have played host to some of the greatest sports and entertainment events in the world over the past two years, and hosting WrestleMania is a great way to continue this unprecedented streak," he said in a release. "We look forward to hosting WWE and its global fan base as they celebrate this historic milestone at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome."

The Superdome is no stranger to hosting professional wrestling. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was the site of several supershows put on by Mid-South Wrestling and Jim Crockett Promotions of the National Wrestling Alliance. World Championship Wrestling held several live broadcasts from the Superdome in the late 1990s.

The announcement also breaks one of the event's traditions. Every tenth WrestleMania has been held at Madison Square Garden, the venue that held the very first WrestleMania in 1985. The New York Metropolitan Area is hosting this year's card, which will take place at MetLife Stadium.

WrestleMania joins a list of blockbuster sporting events to be held in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck the city in 2005. Since then, the city has hosted an NBA All-Star Game (2008), NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four (2012), and Super Bowl (2013). The city will also host the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four in March.
